Accra, April 13, 2026 – Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has approved a nationwide inter-regional quiz competition on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), aimed at Senior High School students. The approval came on Monday when NHIA Chief Executive Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe led a delegation to brief the Minister on the Authority’s planned “Sensitization Programme and Inter-Regional NHIS Quiz Competition.” Dr. Bampoe said the initiative forms part of the NHIA’s public education agenda, spearheaded by the Corporate Affairs Directorate and the Provider and Clients Relations Unit. The project seeks to improve students’ understanding of the NHIS and promote responsible health-seeking behaviour.

He stressed the NHIA’s strategic partnership with the Education Ministry, Ghana Education Service, and other key institutions to advance Ghana’s goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Hon. Iddrisu welcomed the project and directed the Ghana Education Service leadership to oversee its implementation. The Tamale South MP said he expects the programme to deepen public understanding and drive long-term behavioural change in NHIS enrolment and membership retention. The Minister also commended NHIA Executive Management for backing government’s planned roll-out of the Free Primary Health Care (FPHC) and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as Mahama Cares. How the Quiz Will Run

The competition is scheduled for May to November 2026, aligning with the GES-approved school calendar. It will be staged regionally, covering two regions per month. Each of Ghana’s 16 regions will be represented by three selected Senior High Schools. Participants will answer questions on the NHIS Benefit Package, member responsibilities, exemption categories, and the scheme’s role in achieving UHC. NHIA Delegation
