The Electoral Commission of Ghana has officially announced a parliamentary by-election for the Akwatia Constituency, following the untimely death of its Member of Parliament, Hon. Ernest Kumi. The election is set to take place on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, as stipulated by Article 112 (5) of the Constitution.

In a press statement signed by Jane Mensah, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, the Commission has outlined the nomination process for prospective candidates wishing to contest the vacant seat. Nominations will be accepted at the Demkyembour District Office of the Commission from August 11 to August 13, 2025, during specified hours.

Candidates interested in running for the parliamentary seat are required to download nomination forms from the Commission’s official website, www.ec.gov.gh, between July 30 and August 13, 2025. The completed forms must be submitted in quadruplicate and should be witnessed by two registered voters as Proposer and Seconder, along with support from eighteen other registered voters in the constituency.

Additionally, candidates must provide two recent passport-sized photographs against a red background when submitting their nomination forms. The filing fee is set at GHC 10,000 for all candidates; however, female candidates and persons with disabilities will benefit from a reduced fee of GHC 7,500.

The Commission encourages all eligible individuals to participate in this crucial democratic process and reminds the public to stay informed about the timelines and requirements for nominations.

The passing of Hon. Ernest Kumi has left a significant void in the Akwatia Constituency, and the upcoming by-election presents an opportunity for the constituents to choose a new representative in Parliament.

For further information, the public is urged to refer to the Electoral Commission’s website or contact the Demkyembour District Office.
