A Life of Service

Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari had a long and distinguished career in politics and the military. He served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later became the country’s democratically elected President, serving two terms from 2015 to 2023.

Presidency and Legacy

During his presidency, Buhari implemented significant policies, including a sweeping anti-corruption agenda and economic reform programs. He also made efforts to address insecurity across the country. While his presidency was marked by notable achievements, it was also criticized for rising insecurity, economic challenges, and alleged human rights abuses.

Military Background

A retired Major General in the Nigerian Army, Buhari previously ruled Nigeria as a military Head of State from December 1983 to August 1985, following a coup that ousted President Shehu Shagari. He later made a remarkable return to power in 2015 as a democratically elected President, defeating incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan.

Tributes and Condolences

President Bola Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to London to convey Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria. Tinubu has also ordered flags to be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect for the departed leader. Tributes are pouring in from across Nigeria, with many reflecting on Buhari’s legacy and impact on the country’s history.

Funeral Arrangements

Funeral arrangements for the late former President are yet to be announced by the family. As Nigerians mourn the loss of a significant figure, Buhari’s legacy will continue to be debated and discussed in the years to come.
