GHS 50m Alhaji Wahab Bail: Minority Questions EOCO’s Motives
By: Doreen Boamah Darko
The Minority Caucus in Parliament has expressed strong concerns over the arrest and subsequent bail conditions imposed on Alhaji Abdul Hannan Wahab, the former CEO of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Pusiga Constituency.
Allegations and Arrest
Wahab and his wife were arrested on June 25, 2025, in a coordinated operation by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra and Tamale. They are being investigated for alleged tax evasion, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.
Excessive Bail Conditions
The Minority has described the bail conditions as “excessive” and “unacceptable.” Wahab was granted bail in the amount of GHS 50 million with two sureties, both of whom must be justified, while his wife was granted bail at GHS 30 million with two sureties, one to be justified.
Minority’s Concerns
The Minority believes that the bail conditions amount to financial punishment before trial and are inconsistent with the law. They argue that Wahab is not a flight risk and has a track record of public service, having served the nation with honor and diligence.
Call for Review
The Minority is calling for an immediate review of the bail conditions and demands that they be made reasonable and fair. They also want Wahab to be released on terms that uphold his dignity and the principles of justice.
Politics of Persecution
The Minority accuses the current administration of using state institutions to intimidate perceived political opponents and believes that this is part of a broader pattern of political persecution.
Call to Action
The Minority is urging civil society, religious leaders, the media, and all well-meaning Ghanaians to speak out against the abuse of power and demand a fair and just system. They believe that justice must not depend on political colors and that Ghana must rise above the politics of revenge and retaliation.
Quote from Hon. Patricia Appiagyei
“Enough of the political harassment, persecution, and intimidation! No public servant should be punished simply for serving under a different administration. Let us protect the integrity of our state institutions and free them from political abuse.” – Hon. Patricia Appiagyei, Deputy Minority Leader.
