NHIA Lauds President Mahama for Uncapping Health Insurance Budget

Accra, Ghana – January 13, 2025

Management of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has expressed its heartfelt gratitude to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, for his recent commitment to uncap the NHIA budget, a move that promises to transform the landscape of healthcare in the country.

This landmark announcement was made during the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service held at the Ohene Konadu Auditorium, University of Professional Studies (UPSA) in Accra over the weekend. The decision to remove the budgetary cap, which has constrained the NHIA’s operations in previous years, is seen as a pivotal step towards enhancing the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

In a statement released by the NHIA’s Corporate Affairs Directorate, the management emphasized that this decisive action is not just a policy change but a demonstration of the government’s unwavering commitment to strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system. By ensuring sustainable funding for the NHIS, the government aims to enhance the quality of healthcare services available to Ghanaians.

The removal of the budget cap is expected to have a profound impact on the NHIA’s ability to expand coverage, settle claims in a timely manner, and improve overall service delivery. This initiative aligns with the broader aspiration of achieving Universal Health Coverage, ensuring that every Ghanaian has access to quality and affordable healthcare, irrespective of their socio-economic status.

The NHIA is poised to collaborate with various stakeholders to maximize the benefits of this critical intervention, reinforcing the collective goal of building a healthier and more resilient Ghana.

“We extend our sincere appreciation to President Mahama for this significant decision,” the NHIA stated. “Together, we are laying the groundwork for a robust healthcare system that prioritizes the well-being of all Ghanaians.”

As the nation moves forward, the NHIA is optimistic that this bold move will usher in a new era of healthcare accessibility and equity for the people of Ghana.
