Interior Ministry Announces Temporary Border Closure Ahead of Elections
Accra, Ghana – December 6, 2024 – In a move to ensure the integrity of the upcoming general elections, the Ministry of Interior has ordered the temporary closure of all land borders, effective immediately. The closure will remain in place until 6:00 pm on Sunday, December 8, 2024.
According to Interior Minister Henry Quartey, this measure is necessary to maintain peace and security during the electoral process. The Ministry urges citizens and travelers to cooperate with state security agencies enforcing this directive.
This move is not unprecedented, as Ghana has taken similar measures in the past. In 2020, the country closed its borders to limit the spread of COVID-19.
The December 7 elections will be Ghana’s ninth national election since transitioning to multi-party democracy in 1992. Thirteen candidates, representing nine political parties and four independents, will vie for the presidency
