Ghanaian Peacekeepers Under Fire: Ghana Battalion HQ in Lebanon Hit by Missile Attack
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed that its battalion headquarters in Southern Lebanon came under a missile attack on Tuesday, leaving two soldiers critically injured and one traumatized.
According to a press statement issued by the GAF, the attack occurred between 1745 and 1752 hours local time, with two missiles striking the Ghanaian Battalion Headquarters in the United Nations Interim Force (UNIFIL) area.
The injured soldiers are receiving treatment at the Level One Medical Bunker and are currently stable, with arrangements underway for their evacuation to the UNIFIL Headquarters Referral Hospital.
The Officers’ Mess facility was also hit, resulting in its complete destruction.
The Ghana Armed Forces has assured the public that troops are currently safe in underground bunkers and urged calm amidst the fragile situation.
The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has lodged a protest with the United Nations Headquarters in New York, urging all parties involved in the conflict to ensure the safety of peacekeepers in the theatre.
The incident highlights the risks faced by Ghanaian peacekeepers serving in conflict zones, and the GAF’s commitment to ensuring their safety and security.
