Eight Suspects Arrested in Connection with Ablekuma North By-Election Violence

The Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has announced the arrest of eight individuals linked to the violent incidents that marred the Ablekuma North constituency rerun elections on July 11, 2025. The suspects, apprehended by the Accra Regional Police Command, are currently undergoing processing for prosecution.

Details of the Arrests

During a meeting with the Ghana Journalists Association in Accra on August 20, 2025, the IGP revealed that the suspects would be brought before the court either on Thursday or Friday. This development comes after widespread condemnation from the public, media, and civil society groups over the violent incidents, which included assaults on three journalists and several political figures ¹.

Commitment to Justice

The IGP assured the GJA that the Police Service is committed to ensuring justice and holding accountable anyone found culpable, including officers who failed to act professionally during the disturbances. He emphasized the importance of professionalism in law enforcement, stating that the integrity of elections and public trust depends on it.

Background

The Ablekuma North by-election was necessitated by procedural irregularities during the December 2024 general elections. Unfortunately, the rerun was marred by chaos, with masked men believed to be party thugs attacking voters, journalists, and political figures at polling centers. The police have urged citizens to provide credible information to support investigations, assuring that anyone responsible for violence or misconduct will be held accountable.

Previous Arrests

Earlier reports indicated that two suspects, Musah Muntari, a 46-year-old Station Manager at the State Transport Company, and Ali Saeed, a 43-year-old businessman, were arrested in connection with the violence. Both men are currently in custody and assisting with investigations
