Over 20 Trapped, Four Dead in Akyem-Wenchi Galamsey Pit Collapse

Environmental Desk Report

A devastating mining pit collapse occurred at Akyem Wenchi in the Denkyembour District of the Eastern Region, resulting in the deaths of four young men, with approximately 20 others believed to be trapped underground. The incident happened around 7:30 pm on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

Rescue efforts are underway, with personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and Ambulance Service working tirelessly to save those trapped. However, the unstable nature of the collapsed site is hindering rescue operations.

The cause of the collapse remains unknown, and authorities are yet to provide an official statement on the number of casualties or the condition of the trapped individuals.

This tragic incident highlights the dangers of illegal mining, also known as galamsey, which has been a persistent issue in the area. The Akyem Wenchi Chief had previously emphasized that eradicating galamsey would be challenging without providing alternative livelihoods for the youth.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, with local volunteers assisting the emergency responders. The community is in shock, and many are calling for increased efforts to prevent such incidents in the future
