NHIA Expresses Gratitude to President Mahama for Uncapping National Health Insurance Fund
The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has expressed its profound appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for his crucial role in the recent uncapping of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), a decision set to significantly improve healthcare accessibility throughout Ghana.
During the budget presentation in Parliament on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson officially announced the uncapping of the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL). He stated, “Mr. Speaker, we have uncapped the National Health Insurance Levy. An allocation of GH₵9.93 billion has been earmarked for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to cover claim payments, essential medicines, vaccine purchases, Free Primary Healthcare, the Ghana Medical Care Trust (MahamaCares), and to address the USAID financing shortfall.”

In a statement released on the same day, NHIA CEO Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe praised the decision as a landmark policy achievement, highlighting its alignment with the government’s commitment to providing sustainable and accessible healthcare for all citizens.
The uncapping of the NHIF is anticipated to direct additional financial resources toward enhancing healthcare services, expanding coverage, and improving the operational efficiency of the NHIS.
This initiative not only fulfills a key campaign promise but also reinforces the administration’s steadfast commitment to healthcare reform and the enhancement of medical services for the people of Ghana.
