A violent clash at the Electoral Commission’s (EC) District Office in Kasoa, Awutu Senya East, has resulted in injuries, arrests, and allegations of police bias. The incident occurred at approximately 2 am on Sunday, with supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) engaging in a brawl over the queuing of applicants seeking to transfer their votes.
Among the injured is Ato Koomson, son of Kasoa MP Mavis Hawa Koomson, who was reportedly involved in the melee. Four NDC members suffered injuries, with two hospitalized. Police initially arrested two individuals, including NDC Constituency Organizer Daniel Takyi Mensah, and later arrested NDC parliamentary candidate Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunnor and her driver after a firearm was discovered in her vehicle at the EC’s office.
The NDC has accused the police of bias, demanding impartiality in investigations and the immediate release of their arrested members. The party suspects a ploy to facilitate the transfer of non-qualified applicants, as the transfer process continued without the presence of NDC agents.
The Awutu Senya East branch of the NDC is protesting the arrests, calling for a fair and transparent investigation. The incident has raised concerns about the safety and integrity of the electoral process, with calls for calm and restraint from all political parties. An investigation into the violence and arrests is ongoing.
