Nerquaye-Tetteh, Chief State Attorney Disbarred over GHC 400,000 Woyome Cash
In a significant development, Samuel Nerquaye-Tetteh, a Chief State Attorney at the Office of the Attorney-General, has been disbarred by the General Legal Council (GLC) for his involvement in a financial impropriety case. This decision means that Nerquaye-Tetteh can no longer practice law in Ghana.
The disciplinary action was taken after the Disciplinary Committee of the GLC found Nerquaye-Tetteh guilty of professional misconduct under Rule 2(2) of the Legal Profession (Professional Conduct and Etiquette) Rules, 1969 (L.I. 613). The GLC, which serves as the regulatory body for the legal profession, determined that Nerquaye-Tetteh had collected GH¢400,000 from businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome in 2011.
According to the GLC, during the defense of the state against a lawsuit filed by Woyome, Nerquaye-Tetteh personally orchestrated the transfer of GH¢400,000 from Woyome to his wife’s bank account. The GLC noted that Nerquaye-Tetteh failed to provide a reasonable explanation for this transaction.
The GLC emphasized that Nerquaye-Tetteh’s actions had a detrimental impact on “the dignity and high standing of the legal profession.” In light of this, the GLC has prohibited Nerquaye-Tetteh from practicing law, attending chambers, or offering any professional legal services to the public. The notice, dated January 31, 2024, was signed by Justice Cynthia Pamela Koranteng, the Judicial Secretary.
This disbarment serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding professional ethics and integrity within the legal profession. The GLC’s decision aims to maintain the credibility and reputation of the legal system in Ghana.
