‘At) Nsuom’ Ken. Agyepong’s Vile Against Annoh-Dompreh Backfires

    News Desk Report:

Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, has denied allegations of involvement in the destruction of billboards and artworks connected to Kennedy Agyapong, a flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Supporters of Kennedy Agyapong claimed that Annoh-Dompreh was responsible for vandalizing campaign materials in his constituency ahead of the party’s special delegates congress.

However, the lawmaker has strongly refuted any involvement in such actions. He stated that while he may not support Kennedy Agyapong’s presidential ambitions, he would never resort to tactics that undermine his campaign.

During an interaction with the Parliamentary Press Corp, Mr. Annoh-Dompreh issued a statement addressing the issue. He expressed his deep respect for Kennedy Agyapong and emphasized that he would never engage in activities to tarnish his image or campaign. He reiterated his commitment to political decency and fair competition within the party.

“I have no knowledge of this matter, and it pains me greatly because this is someone I respect. He is not my enemy, and I wouldn’t even do this to my opponents in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who have their artworks all over Nsawam. How much more would I go about pulling down the artwork of my fellow Member of Parliament? This is not the first time they have made this allegation against me, and I want to inform my colleague that I have nothing personal against him.”

Annoh-Dompreh also expressed his belief that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will receive massive endorsement in the upcoming Special Delegates Congress of the NPP.

“When you consider what happened in Sunyani in 1998 and all the statements made by the other contestants, there won’t be any surprises. It will be a resounding endorsement for the most popular candidate, and we all know that is the Vice President. He will win hands down.”

Minority in Parliament notifies Police of #OccupyBOG Demonstration

The Minority in Parliament, in collaboration with Civil Society Organizations, Progressive Forces, and concerned Ghanaians, has announced plans for a public protest against the Bank of Ghana (BOG) over its alleged mismanagement and financial malfeasance.

In a letter addressed to the Greater Accra Regional Commander of the Ghana Police Service, the Minority in Parliament expressed their revulsion over the illegal printing of money, amounting to approximately GHS80 billion, by the BOG between 2021 and 2022. They attributed this action to the corrupt practices of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government, which resulted in a hyper-inflation rate of 54.1% in December 2022.

The Minority in Parliament emphasized that the BOG’s actions have had a detrimental impact on the livelihoods and businesses of Ghanaians, pushing approximately 850,000 individuals into poverty in 2022 alone. They condemned the mismanagement and reckless mishandling of the affairs of the BOG, which led to a loss of GHS60.8 billion and a negative equity of GHS55.1 billion in 2022.

The protest march is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 5th September 2023, starting from the frontage of Parliament House. The planned route includes stops at the Osu Cemetery Traffic Light, Ministry of Finance, High Court Complex, Kinbu, Makola, Rawlings Park, Opera Square, and will culminate at the frontage of the Bank of Ghana.

During the protest, the Minority in Parliament and their supporters will demand the immediate resignation of the BOG Governor, Deputy Governors, and Board of Directors. They cite the findings of the 2022 Annual Report and Financial Statement of the Bank, which allegedly reveal numerous acts of financial malfeasance by these officials.

The Minority in Parliament has called for the full cooperation of the Ghana Police Service to ensure a peaceful and orderly protest. They expressed their commitment to exercising

  • Political Parties Call on Electoral Commission to Reconsider Voter Registration Modalities

Political Parties Call on Electoral Commission to Reconsider Voter Registration Modalities

Accra, Monday, 21st August 2023 – In a press conference held today at the Ghana International Press Centre, a coalition of political parties including GCPP, LPG, CPP, PNC, APC, NDP, and GFP expressed their concerns over the recent announcement by the Electoral Commission (EC) regarding the upcoming voter registration exercise.

The political parties highlighted that the EC’s decision to commence the registration exercise from Tuesday, 12th September to Monday, 2nd October 2023, and limiting the registration centers to only the 268 offices of the Electoral Commission, was not in line with the consensus reached during the IPAC meeting held on Wednesday, 16th August 2023.

During the IPAC meeting, all political parties present, along with sections of Civil Society Organizations, objected to the registration exercise being limited to the EC offices. They argued that this would hinder the participation of the general public, create unnecessary tension due to concentrated numbers, and impose a financial burden on individuals and political parties who would need to provide transportation for their members and constituents.

The coalition of political parties also expressed concerns about the replacement of lost ID cards during the registration exercise, citing past instances of abuse and potential re-registration. They emphasized that the focus should be on ensuring a free, fair, and transparent electoral process, rather than allowing room for fraudulent activities.

The political parties further raised concerns about the accessibility of the EC offices, particularly for eligible registrants in remote areas. They highlighted the challenges posed by long distances, poor road conditions, and the potential for voter suppression due to these factors. They called for a more decentralized approach to the registration exercise, similar to previous practices, to ensure wider participation and accessibility.

The coalition of political parties suggested that the EC should consider using a combination of electoral areas and district offices for the registration exercise, allowing for a more convenient and less burdensome process. They proposed a 7-day registration period in electoral areas, followed by a 7-day mop-up exercise at the district offices.

The political parties expressed disappointment with the EC’s decision to proceed with the registration exercise without considering their concerns and feedback. They called on the EC, particularly its Chairperson, Madam Jean Mensah, to reconsider the modalities and make the process more accessible and convenient for all eligible voters.

In conclusion, the coalition of political parties emphasized the importance of building a strong and credible electoral institution that upholds Ghana’s democratic values. They urged the EC to prioritize inclusivity and ensure that every eligible Ghanaian has the opportunity to exercise their right to vote.

  • President wants ECOWAS to prioritise and pursue dialogue ahead of military intervention.

President wants ECOWAS to prioritise and pursue dialogue ahead of military intervention.

A deputy director of communications at the office of the President, Yaw Preko has indicated that, the president supports every efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution to the standoff between the ousted government of Niger and the military junta.

He made these remarks during a media engagement with a section of the press in Koforidua last Friday.

When asked by a Peace FM correspondent at the function, to throw light on the position of the government of Ghana on the proposed military intervention in Niger, by ECOWAS, Yaw Preko stressed that, the government led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, was of the view that mediation should be the first option ahead of a possible military intervention, as stated in the ECOWAS heads of states communique of 10th August, 2023.

It is worthy to note that, ECOWAS itself is prioritizing and pursuing dialogue. So far about five emissaries have been deployed to engage the junta, in attempts to reach a peaceful resolution of the situation.

He added that, Ghana as a member of ECOWAS is obliged to participate in the collective actions of the regional body. Therefore, the country may be left with no choice when a decision is made to mobilize a military force for a possible intervention in Niger, as the last resort.

However, it is the hope of this government that an amicable settlement can be achieved to forestall a military action.

  • The Urgency of ECOWAS Military Intervention in Niger

The Urgency of ECOWAS Military Intervention in Niger

The recent coup in Niger has raised serious concerns about stability and peace in the region. In response, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has rightly considered the use of a military alternative if diplomatic efforts fail. However, the cautionary stance taken by the International Human Rights Commission Ghana (IHRC) against military intervention is misguided. In this critical situation, ECOWAS must prioritize the safety and well-being of the Nigerien people and take swift action to restore stability.

The fact that the coup leaders have now shown a willingness to negotiate should not undermine the necessity of a military option. It is important to remember that these negotiations have only come about as a result of the pressure exerted by ECOWAS and its envoy, former President Abubakari Salami. Without the threat of military intervention, it is doubtful that the coup leaders would have been open to dialogue. The military alternative should be seen as a necessary tool to ensure that negotiations are taken seriously and that a peaceful resolution can be achieved.

While the IHRC’s concerns about potential consequences for the Nigerien population and foreign nationals are valid, it is crucial to recognize that the current situation is far from stable. The coup has already disrupted the normal duties of the Nigerien people, and there is a real risk of hunger, killing, and human rights abuses if the crisis is not swiftly addressed. ECOWAS has a responsibility to protect the citizens of Niger and prevent further deterioration of the situation. In this context, military intervention becomes a necessary means to restore peace and security.

The suggestion that ECOWAS has more options than military intervention is overly optimistic. Diplomatic approaches have their limitations, and it is uncertain whether negotiations alone can effectively address the deep-rooted issues that led to the coup. ECOWAS should not shy away from using its military forces, as it is the most effective way to ensure the safety of the Nigerien people and prevent further human rights violations.

Moreover, the IHRC’s claim that ECOWAS should focus on maintaining peace, security, good governance, and economic freedom in Niger and the entire region is misleading. ECOWAS cannot achieve these objectives without first restoring stability. The immediate priority must be to address the crisis at hand and then work towards long-term solutions that promote peace, security, and development.

In conclusion, the cautionary approach advocated by the IHRC fails to acknowledge the urgency and gravity of the situation in Niger. ECOWAS must not hesitate to deploy military troops if diplomatic efforts prove insufficient. The safety and well-being of the Nigerien people should be the top priority, and a swift military intervention is necessary to restore stability, prevent further human rights abuses, and pave the way for long-term peace and development.

The Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okeyere Darko-Mensah has noted that only 10% of faecal waste collected in the region is treated.

This implies that the 90% of the faecal waste collected in the municipality is dumped into the environment untreated.

Speaking at the commissioning of the Sekondi-Trakoradi Faecal Sludge Management Plant in Asaake in the Western region, he said “only 10% of Faecal waste collected in the region is treated, hence this a very welcoming news to have another facility to boost the existing one which is obviously over stretched”.

He stated that Sekondi-Trakoradi is the third most densely populated city in Ghana with an annual average growth of 3.2% and the majority of urban households depend on on-site sanitation systems. The waste disposal site at Sekondi-Trakoradi metropolis area which is located at Sofokrom-Essipon hosts both the waste water and municipal solid waste sites.

“This facility is aimed at significantly improving the environmental conditions of the city,” he added.

He emphasized that the Plant which has a design capacity of 1000m3/day with an averagely 100 trucks visiting the plant daily, will significantly improve the living conditions of the inhabitants and increase living standards in the region.

He added that it will also serve as a learning and research facility for professionals and students in the region.

Executive Chairman of Jospong Group, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong on his part noted that the project was inspired by the President Nana Addo’s vision of making the country the neatest in Africa.

  • Probe Cecilia Dapaah’s Finances – Dr. Sam Ankrah

Probe Cecilia Dapaah’s Finances – Dr. Sam Ankrah

Calls for Unbiased Probe into Minister’s Ability to Provide Sound Reasoning and the Source of Her Vast Wealth

Accra, Ghana – Dr. Sam Ankrah, a prominent figure in Ghana, has called for a thorough and unbiased investigation into the finances of Cecilia Dapaah, Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources. In a press release, Dr. Ankrah highlighted the failures of Ghana’s governmental structures and expressed concern over the lack of concern for the thievery faced by the average Ghanaian.

The recent theft scandal involving Cecilia Dapaah has brought to light the shortcomings within Ghana’s governmental systems. Dr. Ankrah noted that while the Minister now faces condemnation for the theft, there seems to be a comfortable acceptance of the widespread theft and corruption faced by ordinary Ghanaians on a daily basis.

Ghanaians endure various forms of theft, including excessive taxes, levies, uncontrolled rents, unfair food price gouging, exorbitant transportation fees, and irresponsible school fees. These issues, coupled with limited access to technological advancements, have created a dire situation for the average citizen.

Dr. Ankrah also pointed out the stark contrast between the luxurious lifestyles of politicians, who proudly roam the streets in their tax-funded V8s, live in posh homes, and enjoy abundant meals, while the average Ghanaian struggles to make ends meet.

The press release emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation into Cecilia Dapaah’s ability to provide sound reasoning in her position as a Minister, considering the serious lack of discernment and wisdom displayed in keeping such substantial funds in her home. Dr. Ankrah called for an examination of the source of her vast wealth, as such a blunder cannot be swept under the rug, especially when these same hands are involved in matters of public affairs.

The statement by Dr. Ankrah highlights the urgent need for accountability and transparency within Ghana’s governmental structures. The call for an unbiased probe into the Minister’s finances serves as a reminder that no one should be above scrutiny, especially those entrusted with public office.

As Ghanaians await the outcome of the investigation, it is hoped that justice will prevail, and measures will be taken to address the rampant theft and corruption that continues to plague the nation. The pressing need for a government that prioritizes the well-being of its citizens and ensures their hard-earned wages are not unjustly taken away cannot be understated.

Dr. Ankrah’s call for a thorough investigation serves as a rallying cry for the people of Ghana, urging them to demand accountability and transparency from their leaders. Only through such efforts can the nation move towards a future where the average Ghanaian is no longer subjected to the thievery and corruption that has become all too common.

  • Ghanaians Call for Special Prosecutor to Investigate Minister and Husband over Alleged Stolen Funds

Ghanaians Call for Special Prosecutor to Investigate Minister and Husband over Alleged Stolen Funds

Ghanaians Demand Special Prosecutor Investigate Minister and Husband for Alleged Stolen Funds

Accra, Ghana – Ghanaians are calling on the Special Prosecutor to take action against Cecilia Abena Dapaah, Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, and her husband, Daniel Osei Kuffour, following the discovery of large sums of money in their residence. The calls for an arrest, investigation, and prosecution come after allegations of US$1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghana Cedis being found in their house.

Some Ghanaians, who spoke to the Metro Lens newspaper, have questioned how the Minister acquired such wealth and maintained a luxurious lifestyle in a country still grappling with poverty and development challenges. They are calling on the President to follow the example of his predecessor, John Dramani Mahama, who immediately sacked the then Deputy Communications Minister Victoria Hammah after she was recorded allegedly saying she would stay in politics until she made $1 million.

The case revolves around the arrest and charges against two house assistants, Patience Botwe and Sarah Agyei, who are currently facing trial in an Accra Circuit Court. They have been accused of being involved in the theft of significant amounts of money and personal belongings belonging to Cecilia Abena Dapaah and her husband.

According to reports, the thefts, which involve millions of Ghana Cedis, took place between July and October 2022 at the couple’s residence in Abelemkpe, a suburb of Accra. The accused, Patience and Sarah, are facing charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and multiple counts of theft, involving US$1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghana Cedis.

During the same period, the pair allegedly stole various personal items from Cecilia Abena Dapaah, including clothes, handbags, perfumes, and jewelry, valued at US$95,000. Patience is also accused of acting alone in stealing Kente cloth worth GH¢90,000 and men’s suits worth US$3,000, which belonged to the Minister’s husband.

In addition to the house assistants, three other individuals have been charged in connection with the thefts. Benjamin, a plumber, is accused of dishonestly receiving GH¢180,000, while Kweku Botwe, a trader, faces charges for dishonestly receiving GH¢50,000. Malik Dauda, an unemployed individual, is alleged to have dishonestly received GH¢1 million.

All five accused individuals appeared before an Accra Circuit Court presided over by Judge Susana Ekuful on Thursday, July 20, 2023. However, their pleas have not yet been taken.

Sarah has been granted bail in the sum of GH¢1 million, with two sureties required to deposit their Ghana cards with the court’s registrar. Patience, along with her alleged boyfriends and father, has been remanded into lawful custody.

According to the prosecution, Patience, also known as Maabena, previously worked as a house assistant for the complainants, Daniel Osei Kuffour and Cecilia Abena Dapaah. Sarah, too, was a former house assistant for the couple.

The alleged thefts came to light in June of this year when the complainants reported the incidents to the police after discovering missing cash and personal belongings. Patience was caught in the act, having opened and entered the couple’s room using a duplicate key. Mr. Kuffour apprehended her upon his return home, as he noticed the room was unlocked and heard unusual noises from inside.

Further investigations revealed the stolen items and money in the possession of Patience and her associates. It is alleged that the stolen funds were used to finance various properties, including a 3-bedroom apartment and a store in Tamale, as well as the purchase of vehicles and personal expenses.

The court has adjourned the case to August 2, 2023, while investigations continue.

Ghanaians are eagerly awaiting the outcome of the ongoing investigations and are demanding transparency and accountability. They expect the Special Prosecutor to conduct a thorough investigation.
