Abuakwa North Municipal Supports Twenty PWDs.
Twenty (20) persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the Abuakwa North Municipality have received various income-generating items and tools to assist their work and enhance their financial independence.
This initiative is part of the three percent allocation from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) designated for persons with disabilities, aimed at supporting their education, healthcare, and economic empowerment.
Presenting the items at the assembly’s forecourt, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Abuakwa North Municipality in the Eastern Region, Mr. Charles Yeboah Darko, praised President John Dramani Mahama for fulfilling his promise, including the introduction of free tertiary education for persons with disabilities.
He emphasized that policies like the Free Tertiary Education for Persons with Disabilities and the construction of disability-friendly infrastructure in institutions are actions aligned with biblical principles and deserving of support.

Items received included a chest freezer, bags of charcoal, assorted soaps, washing powder, toiletries, shoe-making materials, and bags of rice, among others.
The Municipal Director for the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, Mr. Percy Nimako-Yamoah, urges the general public to refrain from teasing or using offensive language toward individuals with disabilities, as such behavior is against the laws of our country.
“Making derogatory remarks and calling people with disabilities (PWDs) derogatory names can lead to legal consequences, including imprisonment,” he stated.
According to Section 37 of the Persons with Disability Act, 2006 (Act 715), engaging in these actions is prohibited. If reported, offenders may face a fine of GH₵600, imprisonment for up to three months, or both.
“Let’s support and uplift individuals with disabilities instead of making them feel bad. Remember, we are all potentially at risk of becoming PWDs at some point in our lives,” he added.
