Asantehene Visits Bank of Ghana, Calls for Lower Interest Rates and Respect for Central Bank Independence

On Wednesday, 7 January 2026, His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, paid a courtesy visit to Bank Square, the Head Office of the Bank of Ghana, in Accra.

The Asantehene was accompanied by more than 20 paramount and divisional chiefs and was warmly received by the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, together with senior management and staff of the Bank.

During the visit, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II described the Bank’s new edifice as “a monument to our generation” and urged Management to inspire staff to reflect the stature and responsibility symbolised by the building. He emphasised the central bank’s critical role in shaping Ghana’s economic fortunes and encouraged the Bank to take decisive steps to keep the economy on a stable path, stressing that the visit was “to listen, not to preach.”

The Asantehene also advocated for lower interest rates to stimulate domestic growth and investment, while appealing for the independence of the central bank to be respected in the national interest.

In his remarks, Governor Dr. Asiama commended Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his leadership, wisdom, and consistent contribution to national stability and development discourse.

Dr. Asiama outlined the Bank of Ghana’s vision for the country’s economic recovery, stating:
“Ghana’s recovery must now move beyond better statistics to better livelihoods. It must translate into jobs for the youth, stronger local industry, affordable credit that does not reignite inflation, and a financial system that supports enterprise and long-term investment. The Bank of Ghana is fully committed to playing its role, firmly, independently, and professionally, so that the gains we are beginning to see become durable and inclusive.”

The visit underscored the shared commitment of traditional leadership and national institutions to Ghana’s long-term economic stability and inclusive growth.
