Ridge Hospital Assault: COFIIG-Ghana Demands Justice and Security Reforms
The executive Chairman of COFIIG-Ghana, Simon Yaw Awadzi has condemned the violence incident that rocked Ridge Hospital in Accra, leaving a nurse battered and bruised, and raising serious concerns about the safety and security of healthcare workers in Ghana. The Coalition for Integrity in Governance-Ghana (COFIIG-Ghana) has condemned the attack in the strongest terms, calling for immediate action to ensure justice and prevent future incidents.
The Incident
On Monday, August 18, 2025, a group of individuals stormed the Ridge Hospital premises, physically attacking a nurse on duty. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many questioning how such a brazen attack could occur in a place of healing.
COFIIG’s Response
COFIIG-Ghana has demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators, as well as a thorough investigation into the incident to prevent future occurrences. The organization has also commended the Minister of Health for his swift response, including the establishment of a committee to investigate the incident.
Security Reforms Needed
To prevent similar incidents, COFIIG-Ghana has recommended several urgent measures, including:
- Enhanced police presence in health facilities to provide a consistent security presence
- Strengthened in-house hospital security with trained personnel to protect staff and patients
- Improved patient reception and registration systems to reduce frustrations and emotions
- Deployment of professional counselors to engage with families during difficult moments
- Improved communication between nurses and families to reduce conflicts and promote empathy
