IGP and POMAB Members Pay Tribute to Deceased GAF Officers

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) have extended their deepest condolences to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) following the tragic loss of three officers in the recent helicopter crash. The ill-fated flight, which occurred on August 6, 2025, claimed the lives of eight prominent individuals, including two government ministers, Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Murtala Mohammed.

The Tragic Accident

The GAF helicopter, a Harbin Z-9, crashed into a forested mountainside in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region, killing all on board. The victims included Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, who were part of the crew.

Condolence Visit

During their visit to the GAF, IGP Yohuno and POMAB members paid tribute to the deceased officers, expressing solidarity with the bereaved families and the Ghana Armed Forces. This gesture underscores the strong bond between the Ghana Police Service and the GAF, highlighting their shared commitment to national security and service.

Investigation Underway

A board of inquiry has been established to investigate the cause of the crash. Both the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder have been recovered for analysis. The investigation aims to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic accident and identify measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

National Outpouring of Grief

The tragic helicopter crash has sparked a national outpouring of grief, with various institutions and individuals paying tribute to the deceased. The Scout and Guide Fellowship of Ghana, for instance, expressed profound sorrow and solidarity with the nation, describing the loss as a “national tragedy”.

The incident has also raised concerns about aviation safety in Ghana, with some calling for improved safety protocols and regular maintenance checks on aircraft.
