Akuffo-Addo Not Seeking NPP Conference Postponement – Fawaz Aliu
Claims that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo petitioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to postpone its upcoming National Delegates Conference have been unequivocally denied by his special aide, labelling the reports as “false and misleading”
Fawaz Aliu, former Deputy Chief of Staff and special aide to ex-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, strongly refuted these allegations in an exclusive interview with Asaase News today, 14th June, 2025. “The former president has made no such request to the National Executive Committee (NEC) and continues to respect the structures and decisions of the party,” Aliu Fawaz stated. He added, “The report should be disregarded and treated with the contempt it deserves.”
This clarification comes amid reports suggesting that the NPP’s NEC, in a meeting held today in Accra, unanimously rejected a proposal—attributed to former presidents, including Akufo-Addo—to delay the conference. However, Aliu Fawaz’s statement confirms that Nana Akufo-Addo had no involvement in any such petition.
It is understood that Former President Akufo-Addo is currently out of the country and will not be present for the two-day National Delegates Conference, scheduled for Thursday, July 18, and Friday, July 19, 2025, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium. Both the July 19 conference date and the January 31, 2026, date for the presidential primaries were fixed in his absence, and he was also not present for the last National Council meeting.
Sources close to the former President indicate that he respects the Party’s established order. He has not commented publicly on the dates and does not intend to, reinforcing his non-interference stance. For any party members with issues regarding the dates, the proper internal processes for redress are available. Former President Akufo-Addo intends to send a goodwill message to be read at the July 19 conference.
Conference Preparations Underway
Meanwhile, preparations for the crucial National Delegates Conference are well advanced. Joseph Osei-Owusu, Chairman of the Planning Committee and First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, confirmed last week that 5,675 delegates are expected to participate. The conference, themed “Rebuilding Together with Our Values,” will focus on adopting proposed constitutional amendments, distilling a 300-page report and a 64-page summary into specific motions for delegates to vote on. Logistics, security, and COVID-19-related health measures are fully in place to ensure a safe and smooth event.
Richard Ahiagbah, the party’s Director of Communications, reiterated today that the theme signals a renewed focus on unity, introspection, and institutional reform, crucial for the NPP’s retooling ahead of the 2028 general elections. He highlighted that the conference would consider proposed amendments, including those from the Mike Oquaye Committee report. The conference will also feature key addresses from the National Chairman, General Secretary, and National Treasurer.
