Minority Condemns Violence In Ablekuma North Rerun Election

The Minority Caucus has strongly condemned the acts of lawlessness and violence that marred the parliamentary rerun election in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency. The caucus expressed deep concern over the recurrence of violent disruptions by NDC thugs, led by Malik Basintale and Mustapha Gbande, who were accused of inciting and directing acts of violence.

Incidents of Lawlessness

The Minority Caucus reported several incidents of lawlessness, including:

• Physical assault on NPP parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, former Fisheries Minister, Hawa Koomson, and Darkoa Newman, former MP for Okaikwei South, at St. Peter’s polling station.
• A police officer slapping EIB Network reporter, Banahene Agyekum, at the Church of Pentecost North Odorkor 2 polling station.
• NDC thugs dressed in brown uniforms, posing as security personnel, were apprehended by police at the Awoshie DVLA polling station.
• Confrontations between NDC thugs and police at Asiedu Gyedu Memorial School 1 polling station, creating a tense and chaotic environment.
• Assault on Deputy National Organiser of the NPP, Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, by NDC thugs.

Demands for Action

The Minority Caucus has demanded that the Ghana Police Service:

• Swiftly investigate the assaults on Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, Hawa Koomson, Banahene Agyekum, Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, and the NDC thugs impersonating security personnel.
• Deploy adequate security to protect voters, the NPP candidate, journalists, and electoral officials.

The caucus also called on the Electoral Commission to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and fair electoral process and for the NDC to exercise restraint and refrain from actions that incite violence.

The Minority Caucus reiterated its commitment to defending the rule of law and ensuring the integrity of Ghana’s electoral process. The caucus urged Civil Society, the Media, and the International Community to closely monitor the situation and support efforts to uphold Ghana’s democratic credentials
