GJA Condemns Assault on Journalists During Ablekuma North Rerun Election

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has strongly condemned the brutal assault on two journalists covering the parliamentary election rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency. The incidents involved Kwabena Agyekum Banahene of EIB Network and Salomey Nartey of JoyNews, who were attacked while performing their duties.

Details of the Assault

  • Kwabena Agyekum Banahene: A police officer slapped Banahene despite him clearly identifying himself as a journalist. The officer allegedly demanded Banahene leave the premises before assaulting him.
  • Salomey Nartey: Nartey was assaulted by unidentified individuals while covering the election rerun.

GJA’s Response

The GJA has demanded an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation into the matter. They’ve also called on the Inspector General of Police to ensure swift and decisive disciplinary action is taken against the officers involved. The association commended the police administration for interdicting the officer captured in a viral video assaulting Banahene.

GJA’s Demands

  • Justice for Banahene: The GJA demands justice be served for Banahene and a clear signal sent that impunity won’t be tolerated within the Ghana Police Service.
  • Education for Security Agencies: The GJA urges security agencies to educate their personnel on the critical role of media in democratic societies and respect journalists’ rights.
  • Protection for Journalists: The association emphasizes the safety and security of journalists are paramount, and any threat to them is a direct threat to freedom of expression and democratic processes

Solidarity with Journalists

The GJA stands in solidarity with Banahene and Nartey, offering necessary support to ensure justice is served. They’ll continue monitoring the situation and engaging with stakeholders to prevent future occurrences
