NDC Condemns Post-Election Violence, Calls for Calm
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly condemned the vandalism of state properties and looting that occurred in various parts of Ghana since December 8, 2024. According to the party, these acts were committed by both disgruntled supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and over-zealous NDC supporters celebrating their victory in the presidential and parliamentary elections.
Causes of the Violence
The NPP supporters’ actions were reportedly motivated by the belief that their party’s parliamentary candidates had hoarded state-procured food items, fertilizers, and other materials meant for distribution before the December 7 elections. Meanwhile, some NDC supporters were carried away by the excitement of their party’s resounding victory.
NDC’s Response
In a statement signed by General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC emphasized its commitment to upholding probity and accountability in government. The party urged its supporters to exercise restraint and celebrate responsibly, trusting the incoming NDC/Mahama government to address grievances in accordance with the rule of law.
Consequences of Lawlessness
The NDC warned that vandalism, mob justice, and lawless retribution undermine Ghana’s peace and stability. Such acts constitute serious offenses under Ghanaian law and will not be tolerated by the Ghana Police Service.
Call to Action
The NDC called for calm among its supporters across Ghana’s 16 regions, emphasizing the importance of patience during this transitional period. With their victory, the party assured Ghanaians that the day of accountability has finally arrived.
