Omane Boamah Condemns Government’s Assault on Media Freedom

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has strongly condemned the government’s attacks on media freedom in Ghana. Speaking at the National Media Freedom Dialogue, organized by JoyNews, CDD, and the Danish Embassy, Dr. Boamah highlighted the gruesome killing of Ahmed Suale, harassment of Anas Aremeyaw Anas, and intimidation of Manasseh Azure Awuni, among others.

Dr. Boamah emphasized the importance of media freedom in a democratic Ghana, stating, “Ghana did not vote for dictatorship in 2016… We cannot tolerate any attacks on media freedom.” He praised President Mahama’s commitment to restoring media freedom, reinvigorating media practice, and reopening investigations into Ahmed Suale’s murder.

The event, attended by media practitioners, civil society organizations, and diplomatic representatives, aimed to prioritize media freedom and protect the Fourth Estate of the realm. Dr. Boamah’s remarks were a call to action, urging the audience to “defend media freedoms as if our lives depend on it” and to hold perpetrators accountable.

The NDC has promised to restore media freedom and sanity to Ghana’s media landscape if elected in the upcoming elections. Dr. Boamah’s remarks underscore the party’s commitment to protecting the media and promoting democratic values.
