National Security Ministry Defends Bawku Conflict Funding
The Ministry of National Security has issued a statement addressing concerns raised by Hon. Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central Constituency, regarding the ministry’s monthly budget of Gh¢ 6,000,000 to address the Bawku conflict.
The ministry emphasized its responsibility in designing and coordinating security operations nationwide, particularly in response to the escalation of inter-ethnic tensions in Bawku in 2021, which resulted in loss of lives, displacement, and economic disruption.
A special operation was established in February 2023 to maintain peace in Bawku and surrounding areas, with a budget allocation to cover essential operational costs, including fuel, food rations, intelligence operations, and civil-military activities.
The ministry clarified that the funds are distributed to participating security and intelligence agencies to support logistics and personnel involved in the operations, with the core mandate of protecting citizens’ lives and livelihoods.
The ministry expressed disappointment in Hon. Ayariga’s politicization of the issue, stating that such statements can disinform and misinform citizens, reignite tensions, and endanger the lives of personnel involved in the operations.
The Ministry of National Security reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining operations in Bawku to ensure overall peace and stability in the country.
