120 Fishermen Defect from NPP to NDC in Ekumfi Narkwa
Ekumfi Narkwa, Central Region – In a significant political shift, 120 fishermen from Ekumfi Narkwa have defected from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The fishermen, who announced their decision at a community durbar on Thursday, cited their need for improved livelihoods and frustration with the rising cost of pre-mix fuel and outboard motors.
Led by Opanyin Owu Bonsu, the fishermen expressed their disappointment with the NPP government’s failure to address their concerns, despite repeated calls for action. They noted that the price of pre-mix fuel has skyrocketed from GHC 520 in 2016 to between GHC 2,500 and GHC 2,800 per gallon, while the cost of outboard motors has risen to GHC 7,000.
Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Running Mate of the NDC Flagbearer, welcomed the defectors and promised effective policies to promote their welfare under the next NDC administration. She emphasized the NDC’s commitment to citizen-centered development and urged the electorate to guard against deception by the ruling NPP.
The Regent of Ekumfi Narkwa Traditional Area, Morgan Darko, assured the NDC of their support to return to power and complete projects initiated in the area.
This mass defection is seen as a significant blow to the NPP in the Central Region, with potential implications for the upcoming elections.
