Kasoa March Against Wrongful Tagging: Residents Demand Fair Media Reporting
Kasoa, the municipal capital of the Awutu Senya East Municipality of Ghana, has long been plagued by negative media attention due to criminal activities reported in the area. However, residents are now pushing back against the perception that Kasoa is a hotspot for crime, arguing that most reported crimes occur outside the municipality.
On Saturday, the Coalition of Concerned Residents Associations organized a peaceful march, dubbed the ‘Kasoa Walk for Peace’, to raise awareness about the negative impact of wrongful tagging on the community. The event aimed to promote peace and unity among residents, as well as to urge media outlets to be more accurate in their reporting.
According to residents, the constant association with criminal activities has taken a toll on local businesses and job seekers. They are calling on the media to pay attention to exact locations where crimes occur and to be more specific in their reporting.
The march was attended by local leaders, including the Member of Parliament for the constituency, Mavis Hawa Koomson, who expressed her commitment to ensuring a peaceful electoral process in 2024. She also expressed concern over the wrongful tagging of Kasoa, citing a recent shooting incident in Millennium City, which was linked to Kasoa despite occurring in a different municipality.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Anita Love Obo Amissah, also emphasized the importance of accurate reporting, highlighting the distinct jurisdiction of Awutu Senya East.
The event was a show of unity among residents, who pledged their commitment to maintaining a peaceful environment before, during, and after the 2024 general elections. The ‘Kasoa March Against Wrongful Tagging’ marks the beginning of a campaign to challenge the negative narrative surrounding the area and promote a more accurate and fair representation of Kasoa in the media.
