Parliament Unanimously Approves Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill
In a historic move, Parliament has officially passed the controversial Anti-LGBTQ+ bill after years of deliberation. The bill, which has sparked heated debates and discussions, was approved unanimously during a session on Wednesday, February 28, marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s legislative history.
Despite last-minute attempts to introduce amendments to the bill, Speaker Alban Bagbin rejected the proposed changes, paving the way for the bill to be sent to President Akufo-Addo for his final approval.
During the session, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin withdrew several proposed amendments, highlighting the importance of aligning the bill with constitutional principles. He emphasized the need to balance the protection of human rights with the provisions of the bill.
The passage of the bill was not without controversy, as a motion to suspend the usual waiting period between the Consideration Stage and the Third Reading was carried, allowing the House to move forward with the final vote. Despite objections from some members, the bill ultimately passed without further amendments.
The approval of the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill represents a significant moment in Ghana’s legislative landscape, with supporters praising the move as a step towards upholding traditional values and morality. However, critics have voiced concerns about the potential impact of the bill on the rights and freedoms of LGBTQ+ individuals in the country.
