Fresh Trouble for Dokua as Akropong Constituents Demand Accountability
By: Isaac Boamah Darko
Akropong constituents have taken a stand, invoking the Right to Information Act, to demand accountability from their Member of Parliament (MP), Dokua Asiamah-Adjei. Frustrated by a perceived lack of transparency and responsiveness, the constituents are seeking answers regarding the utilization of funds allocated for development projects in the constituency. This latest development adds to the mounting pressure on the MP, who now faces an uphill battle to regain the trust of her constituents.
In an effort to ensure transparency and accountability in the utilization of public funds, the constituents of Akropong have written a letter to Hon. Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei, requesting specific information on the allocation and utilization of funds received from the Office of the District Assembly Common Fund.
The constituents’ letter, written in accordance with their constitutional right to information under Article 21 and sections 1 and 18 of the Right to Information Act, 2019 (ACT 989), outlines their specific requests. They are seeking information on the total amount received in the years 2021, 2022, and 2023, broken down by quarters. Additionally, they want details on the programs, projects, or activities these funds have been utilized for, including information on beneficiaries and the amount spent on each project. Lastly, they are requesting information on the current balance of the MP’s Common Fund account.
The constituents emphasize the importance of this information for community development and to ensure transparency and accountability in the utilization of public funds. They believe that access to this information will shed light on how the funds have been utilized for the betterment of the Akropong Constituency.
The letter also expresses concern about the perceived lack of engagement and initiatives from Hon. Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei. The constituents highlight the absence of community engagement, social activities, and project initiation, which raises concerns among citizens who expect active representation.
Of particular concern is the information suggesting that the Akropong Daakye Clinic, the only project initiated by the Member of Parliament so far, has been described as a personal endeavor funded by personal resources. Recent news reports have also revealed issues with the clinic, including leaks, as evidenced in a viral video circulated by its workers.
The constituents note that since assuming office, Hon. Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei has focused her efforts on pursuing a candidacy in another constituency, Okaikwei North. This has left the Akropong Constituency feeling neglected and unrecognized.
The letter raises an important question about the future of the Akropong Constituency if their elected Member of Parliament becomes a candidate for the Okaikwei North Constituency. The constituents express their concerns about the lack of representation and advocacy for their needs, should their elected representative be preoccupied with campaigning in another constituency.
As concerned citizens, they believe that a responsive and engaged Member of Parliament is essential for the development of their constituency. They urge Hon. Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei to prioritize the needs of the Akropong Constituency and provide the requested information urgently.
The constituents trust that their request will be treated with the utmost importance and in accordance with the provisions of the constitution and relevant statutes. They look forward to a prompt and positive response from Hon. Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei.
The letter is signed by Joseph Ahwireng-Danquah, a concerned citizen and the Chieftain of Ghana and Akropong Constituency. A duplicate copy of the letter has been attached, and the request for information has been sent via email to ajdanquah@vahoo.com. The constituents request an acknowledgment of receipt for the duplicate copy.
The citizens of Akropong Constituency hope that their request for transparency and accountability will be heeded, and that the concerns raised regarding representation and community development will be addressed by their Member of Parliament.
