Grassroots Whispers Come To Reality In NPP Confab
In a remarkable display of grassroots representation, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Super Delegates Congress has shown that the thinking of the grassroots is at the forefront of the party’s decision-making process. With only 20 of the superdelegates being government appointees, the overwhelming majority of delegates are individuals who hold elected party positions, showcasing the party’s commitment to inclusivity and democratic participation.
Out of the 961 superdelegates, a staggering 797 individuals are active foot soldiers of the NPP, representing the true essence of the party’s grassroots movement. These delegates include 275 constituency chairmen, 272 regional executives, 137 Members of Parliament, and 17 national chairmen, among others. Additionally, there are approximately 96 diaspora voters who are elected officers of the party, further adding to the significant representation of grassroots members.
The NPP has long been known for its emphasis on grassroots involvement, recognizing that the voices and perspectives of ordinary party members are crucial in shaping the party’s future. This commitment to grassroots democracy is evident in the composition of the superdelegates, where elected party members hold the majority of positions.
The recently held Super Delegates Congress was conducted to select five presidential aspirants who will compete in the party’s upcoming primaries scheduled for November 4th. Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerged as the frontrunner in the congress, securing an impressive 67.10% of the total votes cast. Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, followed with 14.15% of the votes, while former Trades Minister Alan Kyerematen and former Agric Minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto secured 10.85% and 4.01% of the votes, respectively.
Notably, there was a tie between Francis Addai Nimoh and former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, both receiving 1.06% of the total votes cast.
The outcome of the Super Delegates Congress further solidifies the NPP’s commitment to grassroots representation and the importance of elected party members in shaping the party’s direction. The fact that the majority of superdelegates are elected officials demonstrates that the party values the opinions and contributions of those who have gone through the electoral process and have earned the trust and support of their constituents.
As the NPP moves forward with its preparations for the upcoming presidential primaries, the strong presence of grassroots members among the superdelegates is expected to play a significant role in shaping the party’s agenda and selecting its presidential candidate. The NPP’s dedication to grassroots democracy remains unwavering, and the party’s commitment to inclusivity and participatory decision-making will undoubtedly continue to guide its future endeavors.
