Transport Fares Likely to Increase by 20% as Coalition of Transport Unions and Associations Calls for Tax Abolishment

Accra, 21st August 2023 – The Coalition of Transport Unions and Associations has issued a press release calling on the government to abolish certain burden taxes from the petroleum price build-up. The coalition believes that by removing taxes such as the Sanitation and Pollution Levy, Energy Sector Levy, Energy Debt Recovery Levy, and Special Petroleum Tax, unnecessary pressure on drivers and consumers can be eased.

The association argues that the implementation and allocation of these taxes have failed to serve their intended purpose and are no longer functioning effectively. They believe that by eliminating these taxes, prices can be brought down, relieving the burden on drivers and stakeholders in the transport industry.

The coalition also highlighted significant price increases in various automotive and transportation-related items since December of last year. These increases include car batteries, car tires, engine oil, shocks absorbers, and vehicle prices. The rising costs of these essential items have put additional strain on drivers and have necessitated a reevaluation of transport fares.

As a result, the coalition is giving the government a two-week ultimatum to abolish these taxes. If their demands are not met, they have announced their intention to increase transport fares by 20%.

The coalition’s call for the abolition of burden taxes highlights the challenges faced by drivers and stakeholders in the transport industry. The potential increase in transport fares reflects the impact of rising costs on drivers’ livelihoods and the need for government intervention to alleviate their burden.
