Prof. Nyarkotey confers with Gambia Health Minister

Professor Raphael Nyarkotey Obu, a professor of Naturopathy and who is currently an aspiring Barrister at Law at the Gambia Law School, Banjul, the Gambia, held a meeting with the the Gambia Health Minister, Dr.Ahmadou Lamin Samateh, to discuss the states of affairs of traditional and alternative medicine in the Gambia and the need for legislation.

Professor Nyarkotey argued that a profession that is not regulated pose danger to public health. hence, there is the need for legislation and regulations of the practitioners in the Gambia.
Professor Nyarkotey who is helping the national traditional healers in the Gambia as an aspiring Barrister at Law to help standardized their profession recently published a book on regulations of traditional and alternative medicine in the Gambia.

The minister admonishes the work of Prof. Nyarkotey in the Gambia as an aspiring Barrister at law at the Gambia Law school and encouraged him to continue rendering his support to the practitioners. He also praised his writing prowess in educating the public and creating awareness of evidence based natural remedies.

The Minister further challenges the department of traditional medicine at the ministry of Health to work hard to get the legal framework on traditional medicine passed especially when the profession has someone like Prof. Nyarkotey who is a practitioner with a legal background in the country.

Prof. Nyarkotey was also accompanied by two of his colleagues at the Gambia Law school, the project manager of the national traditional medicine program at the Ministry of Health and the President of the Traditional healers assembly, Mr. Saliue Puye.
