Bawumia Condemns Killing of Ghanaian Traders in Burkina Faso, Urges Stronger Regional Intelligence

Accra — The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed shock and sorrow after receiving reports that some Ghanaian traders were killed and several others injured in a terrorist attack in Burkina Faso.

In a brief statement issued on Monday, Dr. Bawumia, joined by the NPP and his wife Samira, extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a quick recovery to those hurt in the incident.

“This is shocking news,” the statement read. “Ghanaian traders must not be left to such peril as they go about their trade.” Dr. Bawumia urged the government to deepen intelligence collaboration with neighbouring countries to ensure that Ghanaians are protected wherever they find themselves, and called for strengthening the country’s “well established framework for preventing and countering violent extremism and terrorism.”

The comments come amid continuing instability in parts of the Sahel, where Burkina Faso has experienced repeated militant attacks in recent years that have disrupted regional trade and displaced communities. Dr. Bawumia’s call emphasizes the perceived need for closer regional security cooperation to protect citizens engaged in cross-border commerce.

No further details about the attack or the number of victims were provided in the statement. The NPP leader’s appeal asks for renewed attention to intelligence-sharing and preventive measures to safeguard Ghanaians abroad.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party. The party and his family reiterated their sympathy to the bereaved and support for the injured as investigations and responses to the attack continue.
