Bawumia Wins Big: Sweeps Primaries, Eyes Presidency in 2028
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has clinched a resounding victory in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries, securing the party’s flagbearership for the 2028 general elections with an outright and commanding performance that has positioned him as the frontrunner to reclaim power for the NPP.
The Electoral Commission officially declared the results following the January 31, 2026, primaries, confirming Dr. Bawumia received 110,643 votes, representing 56.48% of the total valid votes cast by delegates across 333 polling centres nationwide. This clear majority well above the 50% threshold eliminated any need for a run-off and marked a decisive sweep of the contest.
Kennedy Ohene Agyapong came in second with 46,554 votes (23.76%), while Dr. Bryan Acheampong placed third with 36,303 votes (18.53%). Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum trailed with 1,999 votes (1.02%), and the remainder included minor candidates and rejected ballots.
In a show of widespread dominance, Dr. Bawumia swept victories in 14 out of Ghana’s 16 regions, according to regional summaries, he recorded strong landslides in traditional NPP strongholds such as Ashanti, Greater Accra, Eastern, Bono East, Ahafo, Northern, Upper East, and others, demonstrating broad appeal across urban, rural, and emerging areas. Only Volta Region went to Dr. Bryan Acheampong, and Central Region to Kennedy Agyapong, yet Bawumia’s national lead remained unassailable.
The primaries, involving over 200,000 accredited delegates, were conducted peacefully despite the logistical scale, with high turnout and transparent collation praised by party officials and observers.
Speaking in his victory address at the NPP headquarters, the former Vice President thanked delegates and stressed reconciliation and forward momentum.”I am deeply humbled by this mandate from our great party family,” Dr. Bawumia said. “This win is about unity, progress, and delivering for every Ghanaian. To those who supported other candidates and to our supporters who have been waiting for us to listen and rebuild, your voices matter. We will heal divisions, unite fully, and work tirelessly to win in 2028. Ghana deserves better, and together we will deliver it.”
Analysts attribute Bawumia’s success to effective grassroots mobilization, digital campaigning, and messaging centered on innovation, transformation, delegates welfare and inclusivity. His campaign highlighted winnability in a national contest against the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
With Kennedy Agyapong reportedly conceding defeat and party leaders calling for unity, the NPP now shifts focus to internal healing, addressing past grievances, and building a formidable platform for 2028.
Dr. Bawumia’s decisive triumph signals strong party backing and sets the stage for what is expected to be a highly competitive presidential race in two years’ time, as he eyes the presidency to lead Ghana into a new era.
