Intelligence-Led Police Operation Leads to Major Drug Seizure in Volta Region

The Volta Regional Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against drug trafficking following the interception of a vehicle conveying suspected narcotic substances along the Accra–Aflao road.

According to a press release issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service on January 22, 2026, the intelligence-led operation took place on Wednesday, January 21, 2026. Police personnel intercepted a black Liberty Jeep with registration number FK692KF near Kpotame, close to Sogakope.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Charles Adenkule, a 46-year-old Nigerian national, was arrested at the scene and is currently assisting police with ongoing investigations.

A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of ten (10) parcels of compressed substances suspected to be cocaine, each weighing approximately one kilogram. The police estimate the street value of the seized drugs at GH₵1,032,650.00. In addition, officers found about half a kilogram of compressed dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, concealed behind the inner lining of the vehicle’s boot.

The operation was conducted under the leadership of the Volta Regional Police Commander, DCOP Wisdom Akorli, following intelligence received through the Police Intelligence Directorate. A combined team drawn from the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID), Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU), and the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) was deployed to execute the operation.

DCOP Akorli commended the arresting officers for their professionalism, diligence, and integrity, particularly highlighting their refusal to engage in any form of compromise or amicable settlement.

The seized exhibits are expected to be forwarded to the Forensic Laboratory for examination and analysis. The Volta Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to combating drug trafficking and other forms of crime, while encouraging the public to continue providing credible information to support policing efforts.
