Veteran Gospel Music Maestro Yaw Sarpong Passes On

Renowned Ghanaian gospel musician and choral leader, Yaw Sarpong, has died,The Metrolens has learned.

The iconic composer and choir director, famed for establishing and leading the influential gospel ensemble Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo, is reported to have passed away after a prolonged period of illness.

His death comes just weeks after the passing of Maame Tiwaa, a prominent member and instrumental figure within the Asomafo group, a loss that significantly impacted the ensemble and the broader gospel music fraternity.

As of the time of this publication, no formal communication has been issued by the family or the management of the late musician, leaving details surrounding his death limited.

Yaw Sarpong is celebrated as a trailblazer in Akan gospel music, having played a critical role in shaping and popularising the genre in Ghana. Through decades of dedication to ministry and music, he led Asomafo to produce numerous spiritually uplifting songs that have become deeply embedded in Christian worship across the country.

Among his most cherished works are timeless compositions such as Wo Haw Ne Sen, Tie Obiaa, Aduro Yesu, and Awurade Kasa, which continue to resonate with congregations and gospel music lovers nationwide.

In acknowledgment of his outstanding contribution to Ghana’s music industry and gospel ministry, Yaw Sarpong was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

His passing marks the end of an era in Ghanaian gospel music, but his legacy lives on through the countless lives touched by his songs and ministry.
