The Obuasi High Court has dismissed the election petition filed by former Trade and Industry Minister, Kobina Tahiru Hammond, challenging the parliamentary election of Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani as Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa. The court, presided over by Justice Kwabena Twumasi, imposed a fine of ¢60,000 on Hammond for what it described as a waste of the court’s time.
Background
Hammond, who had represented Adansi Asokwa in Parliament for over 20 years, lost his seat in the 2024 general elections to Dorani, the National Democratic Congress candidate, by a margin of 954 votes. Dorani secured 14,229 votes, while Hammond garnered 13,275 votes. Dissatisfied with the outcome, Hammond filed a petition at the Obuasi High Court on January 15, 2025, contesting the results.
Court’s Ruling
However, Hammond’s repeated absence from court proceedings on three consecutive occasions led to the dismissal of the case. Justice Twumasi ruled that the petition lacked merit and was a waste of the court’s time, hence the ¢60,000 fine. Counsel for Dorani, Richard Andy, welcomed the decision, stating that it would allow his client to focus on his legislative responsibilities.
Reaction from Dorani
In a surprising move, Dorani urged Hammond to consider joining the National Democratic Congress, citing that Hammond’s parents were alleged sympathizers of the party. This comment has sparked interest in the political dynamics of the Adansi Asokwa constituency.
Implications
The dismissal of the petition paves the way for Dorani to continue his work as Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa without further interruptions. Hammond, on the other hand, may explore other options, including appealing the court’s decision or re-strategizing for future elections.
