Minority Slams ‘Unlawful Conduct’ at Ridge Hospital

By: Isaac Boamah Darko

The Minority Health Caucus of Parliament has strongly condemned the actions of Mr. Ralph St. Williams after a video widely circulated on social media showed him entering the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital) on Monday, 18 August 2025 in the company of a group of men.

In a statement signed by Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, Ranking Member of the Minority Health Caucus, the group said the footage appears to show Mr. St. Williams shouting, filming health professionals, patients and visitors without consent, and causing disruption in the medical facility. The caucus described the behaviour as “unlawful, reckless, and deeply inconsiderate of the ethical standards that govern our healthcare institutions.”

“Hospitals are places of care, healing, and confidentiality; they are not theatres for political theatrics or disruptive conduct,” the statement said, adding that the intrusion was an affront to public order and the dignity of frontline health workers.

The caucus also pointed to a recent public altercation involving Mr. St. Williams and a minority Member of Parliament that required police intervention, saying the latest incident forms part of a “worrying pattern of behaviour.” The statement expressed concern that Mr. St. Williams has since been seen in cordial interaction with the Minister of Health, a development the caucus said raises “serious questions” about whether the government’s response is tacitly encouraging such conduct.

“It is becoming increasingly apparent that the government has, by its silence and gestures of accommodation, given licence to individuals aligned with or sympathetic to the National Democratic Congress to engage in needless acts of intimidation, disorder and political violence under the guise of activism,” the caucus said, warning that selective tolerance undermines public trust in democratic institutions and the morale of health workers.

The Minority Health Caucus extended an apology to the management, staff, patients and visitors of Ridge Hospital for the disruption and reaffirmed its appreciation for the dedication of Ghana’s health workforce. It urged the Ghana Police Service to carry out a full investigation and take necessary legal action to deter future occurrences.

The statement also called on the Minister of Health to convene a joint inquiry with the parliamentary Select Committee on Health “to unravel issues leading to this unfortunate incidence.” The caucus said it remains committed to safeguarding patient rights and protecting health workers from intimidation and partisan abuse.

Attempts to reach Mr. Ralph St. Williams and the Ministry of Health for comment were not immediately successful.
