By: Isaac Boamah Darko
The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has assured Ghanaians of the Ghana Police Service’s unwavering commitment to providing a safe and secure environment for the upcoming Akwatia by-election, slated for September 2. This assurance was made during a visit to the High-Risk Operation Training Centre at Akyerematen on August 20, 2025, where the Police Management Board assessed the preparedness of police personnel ahead of the polls.
Key Highlights of the IGP’s Assurance
– Enhanced Security Measures: The Police Service has ramped up security measures to prevent chaos and violence, similar to what was witnessed in the Ablekuma North parliamentary re-run.
– Training and Preparedness: Police personnel have undergone rigorous training on handling arms and responding to potential threats, ensuring they are well-equipped to maintain law and order.
– Collaboration with Stakeholders: The Police Service remains committed to safeguarding all stakeholders, including voters, electoral officers, political parties, and the media.
Concerns and Demands from Political Parties
– NPP’s Call for Decisive Action: The New Patriotic Party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, has urged the Police Service to take decisive action against those involved in recent electoral violence at Ablekuma North, citing a lack of confidence in the security arrangements.
– NDC’s Demand for Enhanced Security: The National Democratic Congress has called on the Electoral Commission to strengthen security measures, including barring individuals without accreditation from the inner perimeter of polling stations, to prevent a repeat of violent incidents.
The Ghana Police Service’s commitment to maintaining peace and order during the Akwatia by-election is crucial in ensuring the integrity of the electoral process. With these enhanced security measures in place, Ghanaians can expect a safe and transparent election
