Michael Tetteh Kwetey elected President of Ghana National Association of Farmers
An astute businessman, Michael Tetteh Kwetey has been elected as the new President of the Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fisherman (GNAFF) for a four-year term.
In a fierce contest which formed part of the 8th national delegates congress of GNAFF held at Brofoyedu in the Atwima Kwanwoma District in the Ashanti Region last Saturday, July 12, 2025, Mr Kwetey defeated his only challenger with four votes.
Mr Kwetey secured 70 votes while his main contender, Dr Peter Kwesi Terkper had 66 votes.
Reverend Simon Banmarigu had 106 votes to win the position of Youth organiser as against 30 votes secured by Temple Solomon Adjei.
In the position of general secretary, Dawuda Nashirata lost to Dr Abutu Kapori.
Other elected officers who went unopposed were Deputy General Secretary: Dr. Israel Kuadzi National Treasurer: Isaac Amanor National Financial Secretary: Mr. Paul Agorsu Danklu, Emmanuel Anunyam, national organizer, Shaibu Mohammed, deputy national organizer
Others were Esther Asi Tettey Akplehey, national women’s organizer, Felicia Ayamga, deputy national womenâs organizer: Rev. Richard Amoh, deputy national youth organizer.
The two-day congress was on the theme: âUniting farmers and fishermen to feed the nationâ.
Addressing the gathering after successful swearing in of the new national leadership, Mr Kwetey, said the associationâs renewed life and strength was not only a testament to their resilience and strategic relevance to the economy of Ghana but also reinforces their role as the backbone of Ghanaâs economy.
He added that no society can ever imagine a future without farmers and fishermen and women, saying âthis very point underscores the transformative power inherent in our collective energies and resourcesâ.
He said âthe time is now for us to put this election behind us and build on our collective energies and resources for the improvement of our livelihoods, and the Ghanaian economyâ and further assure the government of their readiness for partnership to increase productivity and improve peopleâs livelihoods.
He warned that GNAFF would not hesitate to constructively criticize government policies and programmes the moment they realize they may not be serving the interest of farmers and fishermen and women.
While thanking the members for the confidence reposed in them, Mr Kwetey, who is also an entrepreneur, announced that the new leadership would visit farmers and fishermen nationwide to further appreciate our working and livelihood conditions and how we can collectively improve upon same.
In a speech read on her behalf, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Emelia Arthur, said farmers and fisherfolks were the heroes feeding the nation and sustaining countless livelihoods.
She said âyour resilience and hard work often in the face of adversity deserve our highest commendation and added that the ministry remained committed to policies and programme that promote sustainable fisheries and aquaculture sector.
She encouraged the association to continue fostering unity, innovation and advocacy to the welfare of its members and indicated that their collaboration with the ministry, other government agencies a and private partners is key to achieving a vibrant fisheries and agricultural sector.
