By: Baffour Boamah Darko I

In a significant move to improve healthcare delivery in Ghana, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced the rollout of a free dialysis program, effective December 1, 2024. This initiative is expected to benefit over 1,200 renal disease patients across the country.

According to Dr. Da-Costa Aboagye, Chief Executive of the NHIA, the program will be funded by the government, annual budgetary allocations, development partners, and corporate bodies. He emphasized that the program is sustainable, regardless of changes in government, as it has been incorporated into the NHIS Benefit Package and backed by the constitution.

Funding and Sustainability

The NHIA has allocated between GHS20 million and GHS57 million annually to reimburse credentialled healthcare facilities providing dialysis services. Dr. Aboagye noted that the Finance Minister has allocated GHS2 billion for the next three months, ensuring the program’s sustainability. In 2025, the NHIA expects GHS1.3 billion in funding, which will cover dialysis services and equipment provision.

Partnerships and Equipment Provision

The NHIA has partnered with the World Bank and the Ministry of Health to procure additional dialysis machines and consumables. Dr. Aboagye revealed that 30 dialysis machines have been ordered, with seven already delivered and 23 awaiting clearance at the ports. Fifteen more machines have been approved by the Public Procurement Authority. Each machine comes with approximately 2,000 consumables, providing a total of 6,000 sets of consumables.

Agenda 111 Initiative and Dialysis Centers

The procurement of dialysis machines is part of the government’s Agenda 111 initiative, which aims to establish dialysis centers across the country. This will ensure that patients do not have to travel far for treatment, improving access to quality healthcare services.

Readiness of Healthcare Facilities

The Acting Chief Executive of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Frank Owusu-Sekyere, expressed his outfit’s readiness to accommodate the anticipated surge in renal patients. Arrangements have been made at the rental units, and consumables are being brought in to ensure a smooth rollout of the program.

NHIA’s Commitment to Quality Healthcare

Dr. Aboagye emphasized the NHIA’s commitment to ensuring that all Ghanaians have access to quality healthcare services, regardless of their financial situation. The free dialysis program is a significant step forward in the country’s healthcare delivery, and the NHIA is excited to launch it.

Benefits of the Free Dialysis Program

The free dialysis program will bring numerous benefits to renal patients, including:

  • Improved access to quality healthcare services
  • Reduced financial burden on patients and their families
  • Increased life expectancy and quality of life for renal patients
  • Reduced risk of complications and mortality associated with untreated renal disease

Challenges and Future Plans

While the NHIA has made significant progress in rolling out the free dialysis program, there are still challenges to be addressed. These include ensuring the sustainability of the program, providing adequate training for healthcare professionals, and establishing a robust monitoring and evaluation system.

The NHIA’s free dialysis program is a significant milestone in Ghana’s healthcare delivery. With its commitment to sustainability, quality, and accessibility, the program is poised to improve the lives of thousands of renal patients across the country. As the program rolls out on December 1, 2024, the NHIA remains committed to ensuring that all Ghanaians have access to quality healthcare services, regardless of their financial situation.
