Organised Labour’s Position Aligns with NDC’s Election Strategy, Leaked Confidential Document Reveals

A leaked confidential document has revealed that Organised Labour’s recent actions, including threats of a national strike and outspoken views on galamsey, are aligned with the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) 2024 election strategy. The document, titled “Winning 2024 And Beyond,” outlines the NDC’s plan to exploit key issues, including galamsey, to destabilize the government ¹.

According to Salam Mustapha, National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Organised Labour’s newfound activism on galamsey is questionable, given their silence on the issue for years. The government has made significant efforts to tackle illegal mining, passing legislation with stiffer punishments and prosecuting offenders, including the infamous galamsey queen, Aisha Huang ¹.

Government Efforts to Combat Galamsey

• Passed legislation with stiffer punishments for offenders
• Prosecuted offenders, including Aisha Huang
• Used military to seize and destroy property used for galamsey

Despite these efforts, Organised Labour has ignored the government’s concessions and instead chosen to follow the NDC’s politically motivated plan. The NPP is calling on Ghanaians to reject any attempt to politicize the fight against galamsey, emphasizing that it’s a national issue that transcends party politics ¹.

Kwabena Agyepong, a senior campaign advisor to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has also accused the NDC of using galamsey as a political distraction tactic ¹. The NPP urges all Ghanaians to put the interests of the country first and combat illegal mining as a united front.

The Future of Ghana’s Environment and Natural Resources

The fight against galamsey is crucial for the sustainable use of Ghana’s natural resources and the protection of livelihoods and communities. It’s time for all stakeholders to come together and address this critical issue, rather than exploiting it for political gain.
