NDC demands dismissal of sports minister, wants forensic audit into All African Games expenses
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for the dismissal of the Minister of Youth and Sports Musta Ussif and a forensic audit into the expenses of the ongoing All African Games following a series of embarrassing incidents that have marred the event.
In a press release signed by Sammy Gyamfi Esq., the National Communications Officer of the NDC, the party expressed dismay over South Africa’s decision to withdraw its hockey teams from the games due to the substandard conditions of Ghana’s hockey pitch. This withdrawal adds to a list of embarrassing moments, including Ghana’s Cycling Champion, Michael Naaba, having to withdraw from a competition after his bicycle broke down, and the Swimming Team pulling out of a relay final for undisclosed reasons.
The NDC highlighted reports of poor preparations and lack of equipment for Ghanaian athletes despite the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia NPP government reportedly spending USD$195 million on pre-games preparations and allocating USD$48 million to the Local Organising Committee for logistics.
The party condemned the government’s handling of the games, labeling it as evidence of ineptitude and corruption that has brought shame to the nation. The NDC demanded the immediate resignation or dismissal of the Minister of Youth and Sports for what they described as gross incompetence, as well as the dissolution of the Local Organising Committee.
Furthermore, the NDC called for a forensic audit into the budget and expenditure for the games, as well as a televised probe by Parliament to investigate the organization of the event. The party emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency in the handling of public funds and vowed to hold the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia NPP government accountable for the mismanagement of the All African Games.
The NDC’s demands reflect their commitment to upholding the principles of probity and accountability enshrined in the Constitution of Ghana and their dedication to ensuring that public officials are held responsible for their actions.
