A 22-year-old hairdressing apprentice has tragically died in her boyfriend’s room at Assin Nsuta in the Assin South District of the Central Region.
The incident occurred on Thursday, November 23, 2023, around 8 pm.
Reports indicate that the deceased, Maa Adwoa, also known as Mary Aidoo, bled excessively and passed away after her 27-year-old boyfriend, Emmanuel Addo, administered an illegal medication to terminate her two-month pregnancy in an attempt to save his marriage.
To conceal the news from the community, the suspect, who is currently in police custody assisting with the investigation, kept the body in his room until Friday afternoon, around 1 pm, when all his housemates had left for their daily activities.
The suspect, accompanied by his closest confidante, identified as Archimedes, called a taxi to take the deceased to Assin Anyinabrim Health Center. However, she was referred to St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu, where the attending doctor pronounced her dead upon arrival.
Realizing the gravity of his actions, the suspect was advised to surrender to the police to avoid severe legal consequences, which he complied with.
During the investigation, the police discovered pills and empty pill wrappers in the suspect’s room, which were kept as evidence. Additionally, drug shells and pregnancy test kits were found during a thorough search of the deceased’s room.
Although the case has yet to be presented in court, the suspect’s family and some local leaders, led by Asafoakye Nana Abena Darkoah, also known as Patricia Korankye, an aspiring assemblymember for Assin Nsuta Electoral Area, have reached out to the bereaved family to settle the matter outside of court.
According to sources, in an attempt to convince the bereaved family during negotiations, they have promised to take responsibility for the funeral expenses, the cost of the coffin, and provide some compensation. They argue that the deceased is gone forever and cannot return, even if the suspect is incarcerated.
However, some members of the bereaved family, who have agreed to the terms, want the agreement to be documented to minimize the risk of future misunderstandings and disappointments.
