IGP Dampare’s Integrity Shines Through as Ghanaians Laud His Testimony

In a recent development surrounding the leaked tape controversy, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare appeared before Parliament’s Ad-Hoc Committee, and his testimony garnered widespread praise on social media. The leaked tape captured the former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu, and three senior police officers plotting to remove the current IGP before the 2024 general elections.

Vice Chair of the Committee, James Agalga, commended the IGP for withdrawing the interdiction of the three top police officers who appeared before the committee. The interdiction has been put on hold pending a final determination of the case by the committee.

During his appearance, IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare expressed his disapproval of certain aspects of the ongoing hearing, which he believed might grant an undue advantage to his accusers. The IGP highlighted the need for careful examination of the matter at hand, stating, “Honourable Chair, I think we need to look at this carefully. Because that is not fair. Having said that, I don’t have any tape, I don’t know about it. And they should stop it,” on September 12.

One of the witnesses, COP George Mensah, had previously alleged that the current IGP was involved in the taping of the conversation captured in the leaked tape. COP Mensah further claimed that Dr. George Akuffo Dampare had overseen the leak of the tape.

However, the IGP firmly denied these claims, emphasizing that it is the responsibility of the accusers to substantiate their assertions before he is called upon to respond. He expressed concern that these actions were attempts to divert attention and suggested that they be carefully examined.

The IGP, along with the four previous witnesses, is expected to appear before the council on Wednesday. Additionally, the National Security Minister, who was mentioned in connection with a supposed NIB investigation, will also join the proceedings.
