The event also included the unveiling of a 1.2\u2011kilometre paved road \u2014 named Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin Street \u2014 which, organisers said, was fully funded by the chief and people of Akyem Adadientem. The street was officially opened by the Okyenhemaa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Baffour Boamah Darko, Mawerehene of Akyem Adadientem and CEO of REBISA Company Ltd, which constructed the road and the statue\u2019s roundabout, said the community project cost two million Ghana cedis. Osabarima Marfo Kwabrane was honoured at the ceremony for representing the Okyenhene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Barima Ofori Asante, chief of Akyem Adadientem, used the occasion to note other local ties of national significance, saying Lady Julia Osei\u2011Tutu, the Asantehene\u2019s wife, also hails from Akyem Adadientem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Honouring a contested legacy<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Danquah \u2014 born on 19 December 1895 \u2014 is remembered as a scholar, lawyer, politician and key figure in the movement for self\u2011government. His family is linked historically with the Ofori\u2011Atta dynasty; his ancestry and early upbringing in the Eastern Region shaped his scholarship and public life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speakers at the ceremony reflected on both Danquah\u2019s intellectual contributions and the controversy surrounding his detention and death. \u201cThe circumstances of his untimely death in a condemned cell at Nsawam in 1965 remain an ugly scar on the nation\u2019s conscience,\u201d Mr. Akufo\u2011Addo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Antoinette Tsibu Darko, Executive Director of the Danquah Institute, described the monument as \u201ca compass for our conscience\u201d and urged Ghanaians to reclaim Dr. Danquah\u2019s ideals of liberty, knowledge and justice. \u201cThis monument ensures future generations will learn of a principled hero who loved this land more than his own life,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Plans for education and commemoration<\/p>\n\n\n\n Organisers used the unveiling to announce several legacy projects intended to anchor Dr. Danquah\u2019s memory in Adadientem:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Organisers said the academy and other projects will be staged progressively and will seek partnerships and funding to realize their ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The statue unveiling in Adadientem joins a broader effort by the Danquah Institute, traditional authorities and local leaders to enshrine Dr. J.B.
